William O'Brien State Park

Marine-on-St. Croix, MN

Reviewed March 6th, 2005

The large solid outhouses peppered throughout this state park feature tremendous white exhaust vents which seem to a great job of venting dangerous (and smelly, yes) methane gases. The relative newness of the buildings helped quite a deal - but let's be honest here, it's an outhouse. It's not meant to be pleasant or friendly or feature-laden. The most you can expect is maybe convenience. And they are convenient - located near all the campsites and even in the middle of long hiking trails where you might normally be tempted to find a tree that may need some watering. Just when you start to regret the convenience of your Camelbak, you catch a glimpse of a 20 foot tall PVC pipe through a clearing in the trees. Ah relief is on the way.
