Widmer Brewery

Widmer Brewery

Portland, OR

Reviewed April 1st, 2004

After quaffing a few high quality brews in this German Brauhouse, the inevitible urge to purge the bladder makes the hunt for the toilet urgent. However, after being directed to walk past the open food preparation area, you encounter the dreaded stairway. Yes, you must head into the bowels of the brewery to find respite.

After negotiating the narrow, loosely carpeted steps, you enter the tiny cubical that doubles as its own stall. Smaller than most roadside gas station loos, this unisex facility virtually requires all to sit as there simply is not enough room to stand in front of the bowl and hit the target without contortions. Using bar soap is probably not the most satisfying method of lathering up afterwards, particularly if the cooks and waitstaff are using this same sink, but at least the hand dryer air is fed directly from the oven, nice and toasty. The return trip up the stairs is just as risky, but at least you can follow the light at the top of the stairs and see your eventual goal.

Overall, make sure that you depart this restaurant shortly after "tapping the keg" as return trips following a few more pints of Hefe may be hazardous. Unfortunately, this restroom did not match the "upper crust" atmosphere of the restaurant and bar.
